What Does A Pharmacy Technician Do?

A pharmacy technician is one who helps a licensed pharmacist with several duties such as maintaining patient profiles, labeling, dispensing medications, formulating as well as other tasks that may be involved. They are not required to attend medical school, their jobs are usually restricted and they are not supposed to offer any patients advice regarding what medication to take.

In order to become qualified in this profession, some do go to school to get the necessary training and skills for the job. Some of the certification classes are chemistry, anatomy or any other medical concepts available. With a certification, one is able to impress employers when seeking a job. While some go to school to get some education regarding the profession, others may just learn while already on the job.

Such people, who learn on the job, usually start on a low level such as clerks, then to handling or registers and other duties before they start training as a technician. In some regions of the world, technicians are also referred to as clerks and there is no major difference between the two jobs. The qualifications that one must have to be able to work in this profession do vary between countries but there is a good market for those who are trained.

This profession has duties that may vary. In most cases though, they are involved with clerking in the pharmacy and help in double checking some of the prescriptions or in other instances they could organize patient records in the computerized systems. If not any of those, a pharmacy technician may be involved in filling of prescriptions by either dispensing pills or the liquids and thereafter create a label for those prescriptions.

He or she may also have conversations with the pharmacist about the potential interactions that one may get from a particular drug or any other risks that the doctor who made the prescriptions may have overlooked. However, it is the role of the pharmacist to check whatever work has been done and make sure that it was done well.

When in hospitals, technicians could assist in filling prescription orders, help nurses in assembling the prescription packets that are to be given to the patients or in recording the administered medications into patient charts. Here still, it is a licensed pharmacist to supervise a technician’s work just to make certain that he/she has not made any mistakes and if all is well, the medications can then be given to the patient.

Pharmacy technicians usually get good salaries as well as benefits most especially if they get to work in hospital environments. Not much tax is actually deducted from their salaries however, they are always on their feet, moving up and down and at time lifting heavy boxes. It is advised that those who have moral or ethical issues regarding certain medications not take this profession.
